Hanfi Islamic scholars specifically define khamr as alcoholic beverages made from grapes or dates that cause drunkenness. It is the classic form of wine mentioned in the Qur’an. It is ḥarām (forbidden) to consume and apply in Islam, even in small amounts and regardless of concentration and whether it intoxicates or not.
Mālikī, Shāfiʿī, Ḥanbalī Islamic scholars broadly define khamr as all beverages that cause drunkenness regardless of its source.
